I should have known
I should have been more aware of the situation.
The few times I've come home unannounced and found them huddled close together in the corner of the pool.
Or bobbing around the handrail by the steps, touching gently and ever so briefly.
But everything pointed against it. Plus, it's not the kind of possibility that runs thru your mind when you notice them smiling at each other.
But now that I look back, all the signs were there. So does that make me to blame for not noticing them?
Could it be that I left them together too much?
Should I have supervised the whole thing more closely?
We went to the lake yesterday for a cookout (the boat still isn't running but we just hitched a ride to the sandbar and hung out there all afternoon) and it was late when we got home. We didn't want to disturb them or anything so we slipped in the house quietly and turned in for the night.
Apparently, they paid no attention to the truck being in the carport because when I woke up this morning, I got up and walked thru the kitchen and I looked out to the back like I always do....to say I was shocked at the sight before me is an understatement.
They were right there in plain sight...on the near side of the pool wearing nothing but a smile. Going at it like nobody's business.
The look in her eyes told me that this wasn't the first time she'd done this. It was more of a "sporting" look than one of passion. The thrill of doing it out in the open. The chance of getting caught.
And that smirky smile on his face...the mental image of it still makes me want to get something sharp and....I'll refrain from threats that might incriminate me later.
But the first thought to run thru my mind was...

I didn't think dolphins even liked sharks.

My wife's brother and his family came over yesterday to swim while we were gone. I'm going to guess he left these like this as a joke. Either that, or Mother Nature is getting creative with the wind.
